Stop buying clothes: sew them! ...Resolution number 1

Updated: May 22, 2023

Every new year, we agree, we always make lots of good resolutions that we keep for as long as we can... However, making good resolutions is also and above all having convictions!

So, call it what you will, but here is my first conviction (or resolution):

Sew your clothes instead of buying them!

I'm sure that like me, you've found yourself in a shop, snapping up a piece of clothing and looking at the price tag and thinking... "no way, I can sew it..." and yes you can!

It's just incredible to think that yes you can sew this garment and you can also choose the fabric, add or reduce the length or slightly modify the cut... everything is possible....

What's especially possible when trying to be conscious about your purchases is to reason about your consumption!

"Yes, okay, I like this top too much, but I can make it... so yes, it will take me longer to sew it than to buy it, that's for sure.... "And then the thinking process starts... "do I really need it? It looks pretty much like the one I wore to Lilly's birthday party..." or after consideration, if you are still convinced that this top is for you, go ahead and add it to your sewing to-do list...!

Sewing allows you to have a more reasonable consumption of your wardrobe (as long as you don't transfer your clothes cravings to fabric cravings... but that's part of another resolution...!)

Another phenomenon also comes into play... even if you are a fashionista and branding is important to you, there is nothing more gratifying than saying or making a garment "like Sezanne" or "like Chloé"....

Think of the sense of pride you will have in making and wearing designs inspired by the brands or designers you love....!!

Personally, I was quite a fan about ten years ago of Esprit trapeze or chasuble dresses... they were very simple, but the cut spoke to me, the choice of fabrics too... but at 69€ or 119€ a dress.... I thought twice.... so I decided to sew them myself.... And that's how I started... to desert the shops' cash registers.... to say that I don't go there anymore would be lying, because I like to get inspired, and inspiration can also be found in the shops...but I rarely go to the cash register!

I get a lot of inspiration from the designers I follow, from details I can find here and there and sometimes just a detail on a simple garment makes all the difference so why not on yours? Test, imagine, provoke and shake up your creativity...

Thanks to this resolution, I no longer buy clothes that I can sew, so my purchases are mainly wool jumpers, handbags and shoes...

This year, do as I do! You consume sensibly and sew your clothes, you do something for the planet, for your bank account too and you treat yourself by adding a little self-esteem to your style!

Love, xx
